The reality of thoughts/or not

I often write about thoughts. Here’s another short post.

Our thoughts are usually not reliable and usually lead us down a path we don’t want to go.

Trust me, I’ve been there way more often than I care  to admit. I like things to add up. I want to figure things out. It’s who I am and for the most part it serves me well. But when it comes to relationships, not so much.

For example, someone says something to you and it bothers you. So you dwell on what was said. You think of all the possible reasons it was said, the nuances behind the remark, and what you would have said in reply if you only had the guts.

You really get into it reliving the conversation by giving them your silent two cents worth of retaliation.

You talk about it, think about it, talk about it some more, think about it some more.

Where is this path leading?

How far you go down this road will determine how you will feel. People react this way because they often don’t know how to react any other way. You convince yourself that if you think about it enough you will eventually solve it and you will feel better, so-o-o-o-o- you just keep thinking about it.

And where does that take you?

In circles.

Somewhere you have to get out. A quick right or left turn will disrupt the circle and you can start down a different path.

Your feelings are your road sign to make some choices. With every choice you will either move out of the circle or stay in the circle. We have within us the ability to focus our thoughts wherever we want.

“As a man thinks in his heart, so he is.”

That doesn’t mean we ignore reality or put everything on the back burner just to feel better. I’m talking about the thoughts we use against ourselves in a kind of masochistic pursuit to make ourselves miserable.

So the next time your thoughts have a hold of you, think of that circle you are on and see if you can find a way out by focusing on something else. If it’s a real problem, forgetting about it for a while won’t hurt a thing. But walking away from it for a period might just help.

God bless and because I’m writing this at night, have a good evening.
