Day: September 17, 2014

a bicycle ride turned sour

As you’ll recall I posted a few days how life is always a combination of the good and the bad. Life is definitely unpredictable.

Well, let me tell you what happened last night.

It was a beautiful day here in Michigan. Our plans had changed about the funeral, so we were also planning a trip up to the cabin next week and on to Mackinaw Island for the day to celebrate our anniversary.

After dinner last night hubby went for a bike ride.

He fell. (Yes, he always wears a helmet.)

He didn’t even know he was hurt till about thirty minutes later when his leg started to feel “tingly”.

We pulled up his pant leg and he had a knot the size of an apple. I’m serious, the size of an apple. (I would post a picture but it’s horrible looking and wouldn’t want to gross anyone out.)  Knowing my husband’s unusual medical issues over the years, I took him to an Urgent Care facility right away.

He has a severe contusion (the ugly apple thingee) but here’s the interesting part. Remember, he’s always has conditions no one has ever heard of. Like Kawaski disease as a kid (didn’t know this until his heart attack, rectus hematoma (don’t ask), undiagnosed Australian born virus, etc.

So this time we learn to watch out for “compartment syndrome”. Bet you never heard of that one, either, unless you are in the medical field. Read here for more information.

And, of course, were it to develop into that, it is life-threatening, as were the above weird diagnosis’.

This is my husband. Always the rogue. 🙂

So here I am with my chronic foot problems and here he is with his banged up joints. We truly are the “walking wounded”.

But the point of all this is that “life happens”. This isn’t a blip. It isn’t a detour. It’s just life.

And I couldn’t be more grateful that he wasn’t hurt more seriously. He’s one tough dude, let me tell you.

So I’m going to be very busy for a while. It will take me a few days to mow the lawn. It’s big but with the feet I can only mow so much at a time. I will be up and down the stairs a bazillion times in the next few days. I am definitely going to get a good work-out which isn’t all that bad. I need to shed a few, anyway.

This is the first time, despite all the other medical issues, that’s he’s being confined to total bed rest except for potty visits. I’ve been there several times. Talk about someone who’s going to have a hard time with this! But I couldn’t be a better match to take care of him as I know only too well what being confined to the bed feels like.

Although I will be exhausted, I can’t think of anyone I’d rather be exhausted for.

He’s the love of my life and this IS life.

You either learn to roll with the punches or you get knocked down. The choice is always ours.
