How we “quiet” our souls

Psalm 131;2

But I have calmed and quieted myself,
    I am like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child I am content.

I have quieted my soul

I have quieted my soul

How does our soul become quiet?

Who does it?

Believe it or not, we do. As with most spiritual dimensions, we take the initiative.

God provides the power, we provide the work.

In fact I can think of only one exception: His love for us. God loves us not matter what but even here the argument can certainly be made that we still have to respond to this love.

There are other verses in Psalm where David and others speak to their souls in a commanding voice.

Elsewhere in Psalms (62:5) we read:

My soul, wait in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I shall not be shaken.

I will not be shaken

I will not be shaken

In this next verse David once again speaks directly to his soul.

Psalms 43:5

why are you downcast

why are you downcast

Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

These verses make it clear that peace in our soul comes from us taking charge of our emotions. So what part does God play?

God is the one who equips us. But the first step is ours. This is almost always how God works in our life. Not because He can’t do it for us but because He wants us to grow in our faith.

God bless and I hope you have a good day.

is my inner life consistent with my outer life?

This morning I read this question My Utmost For His Highest:

“Are other people beginning to see God in my life more and more?”

While I think that is an important question, I think another question should be asked as well.

“Am I seeing God in my life more and more? Are my thoughts more loving? Is my inner life consistent with my outer life? If someone were to follow me with a camera for twenty-four hours, what would they record? Would I dare watch it?

I don’t know about you but if my inner life is where it should be, my outer life, for the most part, follows suit.

But not always.

After all, we can put up a good front and say the right things and behave the right way.  We can fool others. Others can certainly fool us.

But deep inside we all have struggles that only we know about. We all know how our thoughts are sometimes less than kind, less than forgiving. We all have our esteem issues. We’re all insecure in some area of our life.

If we think we’re not, than one thing is for sure; we have an over inflated opinion of ourselves and are probably obnoxious.:)

Is God gaining victory in the private arena of our lives? We are the only ones who who would know that. We are the only ones that know how consistent our outer life is with our inner life. And about that camera-what would it show? Only we know.

This week I’ll be sharing a major victory over one of my own insecurities. It happened just last week.  It’s not a  big deal to most people but it certainly was for me. It feels look to know I’ve gotten beyond it.

God bless and I hope  you have a good day.
