How we treat others might avert tragedy

OK, I hate to weigh in on a controversial subject.but here goes.

Something HAS to be done about these mass shootings.. I know we can all agree on that one, can’t we?

I’m a sound supporter of gun rights. My husband hunts but never just for sport. He loves venison.

But hunting rights and the “right to bear arms” has nothing to do with what is going on. It is probably far more complicated anyway than just the availability of guns. Who needs “black” guns anyway?

The guns being used to commit these crimes are not legal.. So that’s the first place to begin. But criminals will always find a way to get guns.

Also, is is NOT true that the cities that have the strictest gun laws have the least crime. The facts are that some cities with the strictest gun laws have the most crime, think Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore, etc.

There needs to be rational, unemotional, and intelligent conversation on BOTH sides. Everyone needs to put aside political preferences and think of the victims.

What if it were your child? Your grandchild, sister, brother,……?

This is America and this should not be happening. We have overcome so much, why can’t we figure this one out?

And not to trivialize these insane shootings, can I just add one idea that seems so small in the light of what is happening, but it’s a way we can all get personally involved.

The young men that have committed these crimes were certainly compromised mentally but aren’t we all to a degree? But how did they get that way? Much too complicated to discuss here but we all know that how people treat makes a difference, doesn’t it?

Stay with me here.

I’m not saying a smile would change the mind of anyone intent on killing but then again, could it?

If one smile reduced even a smidgen of hurt in another human being, it just might cause them to re-think that the world isn’t so bad. The more people that see their world as good, not bad, are much less likely they are to commit any crime.

People who feel loved and accepted, don’t commit these kind of crime.

Think about that for a minute.

I’m just suggesting that we all need to treat kindly the strangers we run across.

I’m not naive. We need to be careful as well and never put ourselves in harm’s way. But most of us never think about that casual conversation and how we might be able to impact another person positively.

The answer to gun violence may involve more than just gun control. It may well begin with how we treat each other.
