DEPRESSION

Do we play a part in our depression? Yes. We do.

I’ve just read a few other blogs whose main focus is depression. My heart really goes out to those who have posted just tonight about their struggles. I wish I could talk to them in person. Or just hug them.

Depression is so horrendous it breaks my heart to read their posts. I hope they have someone to talk to:

  • Someone who won’t judge them.
  • Someone who will challenge them.
  • Someone who will encourage them to examine their own lives and be willing to admit what part they play in their own depression.

Please understand, I’m not suggesting the old “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” approach.

Remember, I’ve been there.

But the hard truth is that we are usually our own worst enemy, especially when we’re depressed. People who fall victim to depression are usually people who feel the pain of life much deeper than most. They are usually highly intelligent as well as deep thinkers. It’s harder for them to shake off what so many others can.

It’s like their barometers respond to life’s pressures from a highly sensitized state. If they can learn to take those same qualities and turn them into strengths their lives will turn around.

It’s hard to look at ourselves and take on some personal responsibility. But depressed people are no less culpable than anyone else. I hear it all the time. I hear it from myself.  The tendency to blame someone or something else for our current emotional state. And, of course, other people and other things do impact us. They can truly put us in a tailspin. But they do not, I repeat they do not, make us think or behave they way we do.

WE do that all by ourselves.

I am not talking about depression caused by grief or physical illness. And I am not suggesting that one might not need help in the form of medication and/0r therapy for a while. But there’s sound research that suggests there are ways we can manage or sometimes even eliminate depression. It just requires a lot of work and possibly some lifestyle change.

Depression isn’t black and white for sure.

Anyway, if you are struggling today, don’t be afraid to ask yourself-Is it really from an outside source or does the answer lie deep within?

  1. Just found your blog… I admire your honesty about depression in this post. I think when people start speaking out about REAL issues, it makes the issues incrementally less scary.   2. I have been treated for depression for about 35 years, and I’m still taking a high dose of medication. I did suffer sexual, physical and emotional abuse as a child. I am now dealing with MS as well as other medical issues. I’m beginning to think that 35 years is a little extreme. I also take medication for anxiety and a mood disorder. I take a lot of medication, and I’m beginning to think I’m taking way too much medication. Yes?

    • I am not a doctor. I think you need to do your homework and decide for yourself. You need to be doing ALL YOU can do. Is there some form of exercise you can do? Are you getting out and making friends. Do you have interest and/or hobbies? Check out my page that lists the books I recommend and start there. I would definitely see a different doctor to get a second opinion about your medication.

      • I am in a power wheelchair, so I don’t get much exercise. I did recently get a new doctor, and my Primary has already started cutting back on some of the other medications. I like to do adult coloring books, but I don’t have the ability to read much, as I can’t retain what I read very well. I KNOW I should be getting more exercise, and I will as soon as I recover from my upcoming elbow surgery. I am going to do ALL I can do.

    • I had this same conversation with my granddaughter. I look at it like this: I want to do everything I can to avoid taking any medication for any condition. I have had five foot surgeries and because of that developed some back problems. I do my exercises twice a day to avoid back surgery. Just continue to make a concentrated effort and you will get better. I continue to th ink of you and I pray for my followers who suffer from depression. God bless you.
