lemon meringue pie

How to make a true lemon meringue pie and why it really matters

My friend and I were talking, well, more like friendly arguing, about what is and what is not a lemon meringue pie.

So I thought I would bring all of you in on it.

I contend that a Lemon Meringue Pie is a pie made with a cooked lemon custard filling. Could be boxed or made from scratch.

She makes a dessert called Lemon Meringue Pie that uses Eagle Brand milk, Cream Cheese, sugar, etc.  I explained to  her the pie she makes is an “icebox” or refrigerator-type pie, not a lemon meringue pie.

She says, “Well, it’s lemon filled and it is has meringue, therefore……..”

That makes some sense but still……………………

S0-o-o-o-o, I checked it out According to Wikipedia:

Lemon meringue pie is a type of baked pie, usually served for dessert, made with a crust usually made of shortcrust pastry, lemon custard filling and a fluffy meringue topping. See it here @ Wikipedia.

A scrolled through thirty Google pages, and they all described a lemon meringue pie as above.

Then I checked the definition for lemon icebox pie:

Lemon ice box pie is a dessert consisting of lemon juice, eggs, and condensed milk in a pie crust, frequently made of graham crackers and butter. It is a variant of Key lime pie; in both, the citric acidity sets the egg yolks, with minimal baking. See it here @ Wikipedia

You might well be asking, “Why is this important?” I guess the truth is that maybe it isn’t.

But, in the larger scheme of things, how we define something IS important.

I guess that’s why I think that even something as inconsequential as the definition of a pie is a principle that can be generalized to just about everything.

Do we define Jesus as only “love” or do we realize that “love” is only part of who he is, that he is also God and that God is holy? Sometimes definitions fall short.

Do we call God, “the man upstairs” and think this actually describes an omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresence God?

Do we call “excuses”, “reasons”?

Do we use the words “I can’t” when we really mean we “won’t”?

How we define something or someone is important.

Words matter.

Definitions matter.

Let’s give our words and our definitions some thought today.

God bless and I hope you have a good day.
