the cross

Does a sermon always have to be great?

Can we talk?

I want to be honest. Some days church just doesn’t “do it” for me.

Notre Dam

A recent Sunday was one of those days. The sermon left me cold. The music was OK. No shivers up and down my spine. No, “Aha”, moments.

Now before you think I’m a really awful Christian, please don’t. I’m just saying what a lot of people think but are too afraid to express.

But here’s the thing. It doesn’t matter that the sermon wasn’t terrific or that I didn’t feel any “aha” moments. It isn’t about me anyway.

It’s about God.

the cross

While my faith and my personal spiritual journey are not dependent on what happens on a Sunday morning, it’s still good to be there. There’s something about simply being in the presence of other people who are worshipping God that makes me feel part of a community.

It makes me feel stronger.

It makes me feel I am supported.

So if you have a Sunday that doesn’t quite meet your needs, remember it isn’t about you. More than likely someone’s needs were met. Someone else thoroughly enjoyed that sermon.

I think sometimes we put too much stock in what we expect from our pastors and leaders. We expect “church” to do what we’re supposed to be doing ourselves.

It’s kind of like parents who expect the school to do what they as parents should be doing.

I like attending church but it’s only a small part of my Christian experience. If I didn’t exercise all the spiritual disciplines that are crucial to my faith, church by itself, would never be enough. Church is never a substitute for prayer and Bible study.

Anyway, I hope this helped for those days when you feel as I do sometimes.

God bless and have a good day.
