Day: November 10, 2016

What are we so afraid of anyway?

Why are so many people still “flipping out” over this election? Are we so afraid of one person?

Well, yes, I guess many people are. I get that. It’s hard to think that a person with the personality of Donald Trump is going to be our leader. I’m uncomfortable as well.

But I’m not afraid. I’m not moving to Canada. I’m not holding my breath wondering what’s happening next. I’m not grieving. I’m not wringing my hands. I’m not running around like Chicken Little and yelling, “The sky is falling, the sky is falling.”

I also don’t think the people who voted for Trump were stupid, deplorable, or irredeemable. They had legitimate concerns. They felt left out. There are more disenfranchised groups than just the ones that make the headlines.

But I have to say, I felt very bad for Hilary Clinton. Being president has been her overriding goal her entire life and to see that evaporate as quickly and soundly as it did, must have been heartbreaking. And while I wasn’t a fan of her policies, I was secretly looking forward to the possibility of a woman becoming president.

Politics are like any game we play. Someone has to win and someone has to lose. It’s hard to be a loser but it’s important to be the right kind of winner as well.

I hope that’s where we’re headed. I hope we will all find a way to give Mr. Trump a chance.  I would’ve given Hilary a chance. I gave Obama a chance.

My daughter asked my seven-year-old grandson, “Did the election come up at school today?”

“Yes” he said. “Someone said, “Boo, Trump.”

“What do you think about that?”, my daughter asked.

“I think we should give him a chance. He might be a good president.” (Yes, he really does talk that way. He’s an old soul in a child’s body.)

I’m going to follow his lead.

God bless and have a good day.

I think this past election has made me aware that I’ve been complacent about the real issues some people are facing. My life is good but we’ve worked hard to get to where we are. No one did it for us. But maybe I, like Hilary Clinton said in her concession speech, don’t understand just how much many people are struggling.
