gettingout-of-bed-

One important step to manage morning depression

You have to get up every morning with determination if you’re going to go to bed with satisfaction.
-George Lorimer

I like this saying very much. Especially in regards to depression. When we’re having a rough spell, the last thing we need to do is go bed unsatisfied. It just makes us feel worse. And because mornings are usually difficult for depressed people because of the overwhelming lethargy, maybe the best thing to do in the morning is to think about how we want to feel in the evening.

I pretty much do this all the time. I don’t always formally plan my day but I try to do something productive every day.

What can you do this morning to make sure that tonight you’ll go to bed with satisfaction? It doesn’t have to be big. Just something that you can look back on and feel good about before you close your eyes.

I’m not very good at this myself sometimes, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t good advice. There’s been so much going on in my life lately, I haven’t had to plan anything because life has pretty much planned for me.

Morning and evenings can be the roughest time of day for someone with depression, the morning because the whole day is facing us and we don’t know what to do with it, and evenings because we have that same day to look back on. I remember the feeling so I never allow myself to stay in bed unless I’m sick. It’s become a lifestyle choice for me.

I get out of bed and show up for my life.

There are some practical things we can do to help, like set the coffee pot to come on earlier so you can smell the coffee. I’ve done this for years. Set your alarm clock for the same time every morning and DON’T hit the snooze button. When you hear it, don’t turn over, don’t cover up with the blankets. Just get up.

I can’t emphasize the importance of this singular step when you’re depressed. It’s not easy when you’d rather stay in bed and avoid facing the world. But the world is going to have to be faced at some time or another. There has to be that one day when you start to get better. Why not choose today to start on your road to recovery?

God bless and have a good one.
