Day: April 11, 2018

Yada, Yada, prayer group

Help, a worm is eating me!

A bookworm, that is. And now that spring is almost here, that bookworm is invading my mind.

If you live in the Midwest or the East Coast you know what a miserable spring this has been so far. But I looked at my deck today and started dreaming of the days I can sit out under my pergola on a sun-filled spring day and indulge in one of my most favorite activities, reading.

I have a wonderful new pallet board coffee table my husband made for me last year but do you think I can find the picture? I’ll show it to you when I do.pergolaAre you an avid reader? I read everything from blog posts, to books, to magazines, and even cookbooks. But for some reason, even though I have more time in the winter, I almost always read at night only. Strange, huh? It would seem like cuddling up in a blanket and reading a good book when it’s blowing snow outside would be more logical.

This is the time of year, I allow myself some “light” reading. As a rule, I’m always reading motivational and/or inspirational books. But I like books by John Grisham, Scott Turow, and David Baldacci.

In my previous battles against depression, books have proven to be good friends. The kind of friends I can count on to keep quiet and let me process. The kind of friends who, when needed, get in my face.

I like to read funny books but I find it hard to find any that aren’t peppered with foul language. One such series is the “Yada, Yada, Prayer Group” series.

Then there are books you don’t forget, like this one:

Please look after mom/inspirational

It’s a haunting and sad book and addresses a subject I’ve very familiar with as I went through this with my mom. It’s about dementia. It’s a sad read but a worthwhile read.

Another novel I recommend is:

A Reliable Wife/inspirational

When it comes to spiritual books, some of my favorite authors are Dallas Willard,  Andy Stanley, John Ortberg, and others. You can click on my menu under “BOOKS’ for an expanded list of the books I recommend. There are lots to pick from.

But every summer there seems to be “The” book  I feel I should read. You know, an important book. A book that’s transformational. I have no idea what that book is for this summer. A few summers ago it was one that even surprised me. Can you guess?

Of course not.

It was Tarzan. I mean, really. Who woulda’ thunk it, right?

I decided I needed to read a classic and that’s the first one I saw at the library in the classics section, so that’s the one I checked out. I never expected to get through it.

I loved it.

I am thinking this year it might just be something by Leo Tolstoy or Fyodor Dostoyevsky. (Are you impressed? Don’t be. I just like to read.)

Then there’s this list of the greatest books of all time. I’m sure there are many such lists. (Why is it the Bible isn’t on most of those lists? )

Anyway, I’m late posting today. That’s because I had to check out our new Ollie’s store. It was so packed I didn’t even come close to seeing it all. Some things were great buys, others not so much.

I’ll take pictures of what I found and show you later.

I do love the pillows I got.

That’s it for today. I have to get back to the coffee table I’m refinishing. You can read about that here.

The sun is shining and this is it I think for about five days so I am going to try to get my walk in. (I say try because as you know I’m dealing with many foot problems that are getting in the way. But I’m going to go as far as I can knowing I also have to walk that same distance back.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your day and God bless.
