How I feel with less weight. How you can too.

I’m afraid that title was a little misleading.

But I am carrying around less weight, the weight of too much stuff.

We are contemplating a move in the next year or so and I am working hard at learning to live with less. I can’t believe the “stuff” I’ve gotten rid of over the past two weeks. But as I said to my husband, “You can’t tell it by looking around. Not at all.”

That’s because a lot of it was behind cupboard doors or stored in boxes. I am determined to only have seasonal items in storage.

At one point I’ll bet I had at least one hundred napkins. I’m not kidding either. I even counted them and posted about it but I can’t find the post now. I love linens and when I find them at really cheap, I have no control. Mostly, because I can imagine all the possibilities.

“These napkins would be great with that set of dishes I have.” (I also like collecting dishes, etc. At one point I had five different sets. One set I had collected over the years just for the fun of it. I’m down to three sets at the moment. I even got rid of my Christmas dishes.)

“Oh, these would be great with those placemats I just bought.” (I have an affection for placemats as well.)

With thinking about moving, it has been so easy to make these decisions. I will probably never live in this big of a house again so there’s that as well.

Seriously I can’t tell you how good it feels to be living with less. I no longer feel I am managing it all. You know, cleaning it, storing it, rearranging it, organizing it, etc. I enjoyed it though. I love thrift shopping, garage sales. It sparks my creativity. And it always will and I’m good with that still. But now if I buy something, something else has to go.

I have a wonderful saying by Anne Frank that I framed: (if you look closely, you can see my reflection in the glass.)

For me, that’s hard to imagine because I’m incredibly happy and can’t imagine it being any better. But God says we can’t begin to imagine what He has in store for us. However, we can’t see to accept it if our lives are so cluttered, and our mind so bogged down with managing our “stuff”. We have to have “open” channels for God to pour out His blessings and that means our minds have to be clutter free as well.

Make no mistake. A cluttered home, too much “stuff” (even if it’s neatly stored), can be a major source of stress and anxiety. Study after study validates this.

So look around your house and ask yourself, “Is my “stuff” getting in the way of a clear conduit for God to speak to me?”

(I feel I should say here that this is pretty much only an issue for those who live comfortably in the United States. There are millions of people in this world that have nothing and yet they are perfectly contented.)

Anyway, I’ve got some more boxes to go through so I will sign off for now.

God bless and I hope you have a good day.
