pier on a lake/desire to prayPrayer 101

What’s the first step to prayer?

The first step to prayer is truly simple.

That first step in prayer is simply having the desire to pray.

But then the desire to do something is the first step to anything, isn’t it?

I can’t think of a single thing we attempt in life that we haven’t had to have the desire to do so first. However, that doesn’t mean desire alone accomplishs anything because, of course, it doesn’t. We all know that but we don’t act like like we do.

I’ve known a number of people who talk and talk about something to the point they convince themselves they have done it. Eventually, they look around and realize they haven’t and now it’s too late.

I may have wanted to be a ballerina growing up but that wouldn’t have done it without years of hard work. I may want to write a book but I will have to put in countless hours before that dream is realized. (By the way, I did and I have and have lots count of the hours.)

Wanting and wishing is different than desire.

Desire is not merely a simple wish; it is a deep seated craving; an intense longing….

Wanting and wishing are many levels down from desire. Desire is the big guns.

Desire means something deep inside is compelling us.

When it comes to prayer, desire comes from heaven down. It is God who creates a desire in us to pray.

Desire goes before prayer and is intensified and increased by it. The more we pray, really pray, the more we want to pray. Once we get a taste of what prayer can accomplish, we desire to see more and thus we pray more.

So important is desire, we might say it is an absolute essential of prayer. The deeper the desire, the stronger the prayer.

Without desire, prayer is a meaningless mumble of words.

But what if we don’t have a desire to pray?

Didn’t I just say desire was essential to prayer? But what if we have no desire?

This is the strangest advice but it’s much like the verse in Proverbs that states the beginning of wisdom is to get wisdom?

Huh?

That just means we have a mindset that we will seek this desire and trust God to give it to us.

When we discover that desire is honestly absent, we should pray anyway. In those circumstances, we ought to pray for the desire to pray.

This is one prayer I can guarantee (because God does), that will always be answered exactly as you have prayed. I know that because from the beginning of Genesis to the end of Revelation, God is calling us to communicate and commune with him. Accordingly, it is through prayer that is accomplished.

Summing it up

If your prayer life is sagging, ask God to give you a fresh desire. Don’t be willing to accept what is, when what is shouldn’t be what it is. (Hope you followed that.)

Go to God and just sit before him and if the only words that come out of your mouth are “Give me the desire to pray”, you have taken the first step.

God bless and I hope you have a good day.
