When your “mission” smacks you in the face

Saturday morning.

alarm clock

The phone rings.

I can’t say it was unexpected.

“Mom has fallen. I’m in the ER with her. I think she broke her wrist”, my brother tells me.

“Do you want me to come”? I ask after getting a little more information.

He said no. She was already in the examining room and thought they’d be leaving shortly.

He was home in about two hours.

Her arm is in a temporary cast and we’ll be taking her today to the Orthopedic Surgeon for a permanent cast. I stayed with her Sunday so my brother could go golfing.

She is unable to use her walker because she can’t grasp it with her injured hand. So when she needs it the most, she can’t use it. Of course, had she been using it, she probably wouldn’t have fallen in the first place but that’s another story.

When I answered the call Saturday morning, my thoughts went immediately to my posts this past week, about finding our personal mission. If you recall, I wrote how if we didn’t meet the responsibilities that are in our path, how can we expect God to give us a “special” mission?

Well, I don’t think I have to worry about that for now. My special mission for a while is going to be my mom. This is what lies in my path. This is where God expects me to put my efforts for now. Will I continue to be on the alert for that unique mission?

Of course.

But for now, I know what I need to do.

It’s been a busy, worrisome, frustrating week-end but I have felt God’s direction every moment. The first prayer I prayed Saturday morning before I ever got out of bed was, “Lord, give me the wisdom I need for each step of this day.”

It’s kind of interesting, isn’t it, how God uses circumstances in our lives to help us answer our own questions? I’m tired but it’s a tiredness that comes from caring for someone else. That’s a different kind of tired, isn’t it?

God bless and I hope you have a good day.
