Tag vignettes

I hope you understand this post today, that I’m not being mean. Because that’s not the point of it but I have noticed something recently and I couldn’t help but make some comparisons from what I’ve noticed on some blogs and about life itself.

To me, one could make the comparison that clutter and disingenuousness have something in common.

I follow only a few decorating blogs but I read many of them throughout the week. I’ve noticed something very interesting.

Many of the blogs show pictures of “vignettes”. And I love them. I try to decorate with “vignettes’ always. You can find some helpful tips for designing your vignettes here. 

For me, because I paint pictures, I always look at my groupings with an artist’s eye. If it doesn’t work for me as an artist, then it doesn’t work as a decorating option either.

But here’s the dilemma, when and if they show the entire room, it often looks just cluttered and all those little vignettes are just lost. Have you ever met someone who is just a little too sweet? It’s kind of like that, like having too much sugar in your coffee or tea.

There’s a very fine line between good decorating and just too much decorating.

Now, I’m not an interior designer but just like there are good and bad in all professions, there are good and bad interior designers as well.

Some of the blogs are just great. Look at these pictures. These are the best of good decorating approaches.

 

I will not post any pictures from where I feel the decorating is too cluttered. That would be mean.

(An aside: Clutter is known to exacerbate depressive symptoms.)

One of the criteria of a good painting is that the eye should have a place to rest.  The same applies to decorating. Not every wall has to be decorated to the full. Sometimes, just one really great piece on a wall is the best approach.

So what does all this have to do with life?

Well, sometimes I think the “face” we present on our blogs is sometimes just a vignette. It’s merely a snapshot of who we are at a specific point in our life. And, let’s be honest, very often that snapshot is when we are at our best.

Maybe that’s why I let you in on my pain over losing our little Rambo last week. I could’ve pretended that I handled it easily because I’m such a strong Christian.

I didn’t.

I took it very hard. We are out-of-town for a few days and the thought of going home and not having that little “furball” greet us at the door is breaking my heart.

Those of you who responded made me feel so much better about my grief. You made me feel it’s OK to grieve a kitty. I was surprised myself at how much I had grown to love him.

We need to be genuine. I think much of the negativity going on in the world is because we do not feel free to be ourselves, to voice our opinion, so we hide behind a smiling persona.

When the person we present to the world is not the person we really are, there is great discontent.
