So what did I do yesterday?
Apparently, I don’t know how to read a calendar. The post about rocks was supposed to post today. So now what do I do?
Good think I’m never at a loss for words or thoughts!
So today I’d like to share something I saw on the news the other day. It was a sign in front of a coffee shop.
I think this is such a good example of how we should greet clerks, wait staff, customer service representatives. I don’t always do this. But yesterday I went to Hobby Lobby and I made sure I greeted each clerk in this manner.
My husband sometimes stops for coffee at a gas station near our cabin. He’s never paid for his coffee. It’s been the same clerk most of the time. He thought the first couple of times it was just a nice thing they did for him for no reason in particular. But then one day, he asked why. The clerk told him that most of the people who come in are rude and ill-mannered but he was always exceptionally polite.
Of course, it needs to go both ways. There are some rude customers but there are some unfriendly and rude clerks, etc.
I ran into one at the grocery store the other day. The young man who waited on me never said “Hello”, (I did), was rude when I asked him questions, never smiled and it was pretty clear he didn’t want to be working.
We should most definitely let management know when someone does a good job. but we should also let management know when an employee is rude and unfriendly. There are enough people who would like that job and do much better with it than allow a disgruntled person to continue.
And, yes, I know they might be having a bad day. We all have bad days. But if you’re working with the public, one should get beyond it. I can say that because I’ve done my share of these kinds of jobs. I was never rude or unfriendly and I had muy bad days as well. A job is a privilege and anyone working in customer service should remember that. Most of the time, I have had good experiences. But why should bad manners be a surprise today considering the way bad manners and vitriolic speech is used by congressmen and women, journalists, newscasters, comedians and some people on social media?

I don’t allow anything on my Facebook page that is filled with hate and I don’t hesitate to “unfriend” anyone who uses hate speech. However, hate speech is not just voicing one’s opinion as long as it’s done in a respectful, non-inflammatory manner. I’m a big believer in free speech even when it show’s up on t-shirts that make me cringe. Besides, it says more about the person wearing the shirt than it does with wherever the words on the shirt are directed.
So think about the coffee shop sign the next time you go somewhere and try to aim for the $1.75 cup of coffee.
